Someone was kind enough to send me the list of hindu festivals and their celebration dates in Mauritius as announced by the Sanatan Dharma society and Govt. of Mauritius. I do find errors in some festivals's celebration dates.
The list of 2008 festivals in Mauritius with errors in the celebration dates:
7 April Ougadi.
WRONG date …. ridiculous. This date should be April 6th, Chaitra padyami doesn’t prevail at the sunrise of mauritius on 7th (Some parts of india like bombay, and delhi will celebrate on 6th April, Where as Tamilnadu, orrisa, bengal, Bihar will celebrate on 7th Apr).
14 April Ram Navami
Ramanavami should be April 13th for smarthas (Non-vaishnavites). The April 14th for shri vaishanavas.
15 August Krishna Janmashtami
WRONG date …. ridiculous. This should be 23rd August 2008 (This falls on August 24th for India, August 23rd for Mauritius)
4 Sep Ganesh Chathurthi.
WRONG date..... ridiculous. This should be September 3rd in Mauritius (Even India doesn’t celebrate on 4th September)
It will be interesting to know their reasoning about adjusting their festivals. The good sign is they are not following the dates from indian calendar which they shouldn't but some dates just doesn't make any sense. Who determines their festivals? How do they determine? When they can celebrate Mahashivaratri on the right date -- March 5th 2008, why not other fesivals?
