Madam Sonia Gandhi's recent cancer surgery

Madam Sonia Gandhi was admitted to a hospital in the United States. When I heard this news the name of hospital was also not announced. The news said "some unknown location in the USA". I wish her speedy recovery.

I've her chart on http://www.mypanchang.com/jatakam/getfamouscharts.php?id=36 and I opened it to see what's causing her to visit hospital? I found out:

Current dasa of Mercury-Saturn-Moon.
Mercury deposited in the 5th house with Sun, and Ketu.
Sun 24 degrees, Mercury 3 degrees and Ketu 18 degrees.
The lagna is 27 degress of cancer hence born into third drekkana.
The third drekkana means 1st house is pelvis, 2nd hous private parts, 3rd house right ovaries, 4th house right thighs, 5th house right knee, 6th house right calf, 7th house legs, 8th house left calf, 9th house left knee, 10th house left thighs, 11th house left ovary, 12th house anus.
Also natural kala pursha where mesha will rule head, karka --> lungs, tula-> utres, cervix and vrischika -> external private parts
We know that Mercury, Ketu and Sun all are in the 5th house in vrischika rasi denoting external private parts.
Jupiter and Venus are in tula just a degree part 23 and 24 degrees and in nakshatra of 6th lord Jupiter. Venus is also 11th badhaka lord. Jupiter is the 6th lord with mula trikona rasi in the 6th house and hence lord of dieases in war with venus in tula rasi and hence tula rasi is afflicted. Being both badhaka and 6th lord sitting in tula definately afflicts 4th house and tula rasi.
According to medical astrology tula rasi rules on internal reproductive organs.
Dasa lord mercury is in nakshatra of Jupiter.
Antardasa lord Saturn is in own nakshatra and aspected by mars denoting surgery.
Pratyantar dasa lord moon is in rahu's nakshatra and aspected by mars denoting surgery.
Here lagna denotes pelvis area as born into 3rd drekkana and hence saturn being there denotes problem into pelvis area -- internal or external.
Saturn aspects 3rd house, 7th house and the 10th house.
Mars and Ketu can cause cancer. Mars aspecting on Saturn placed in lagna and dasa lord mercury's affliction with ketu denotes cancer. Also Rahu aspects jupiter and venus by rasi dristhi. Thus confirming possiblity of cancer.
Here karka rashi is also afflicted and 4th house and hence chances of having lung cancer is also a possiblity as moon is aspected by mars and rahu together. Combining this i thought she is definately having cancer and may of type cervical, abdomen (intestines, colon) or lung/chest.
Current transit of Saturn over 3rd house aspecting her 5th house adds more trouble. Moreever the Rahu is also transiting over 5th house where Ketu, Mercury and Sun are there. Mercury rules nerves, skin, lower part of abdomen, urinary, bladder, intestines, loss of memory, speech. Mercury affliction can cause one of these diseases depending on other factors like houses from aries, houses based on drekkana and rasi.
Mercury-Saturn period from 2009 is very difficult for her.

Till this point of publishing its not annonced type of cancer she is having. But I suspect is either related to female internal reproduct organs(Cervix, Overies, Utres, etc...), abdomen (intestines, colon) or lungs related. But mostly looking at affliction it seems mostly female reproductive organs. I wish her speedy recovery.

Future:
The recovery now may be temporary. Jupiter and Moon continues to be afflicted and hence she needs extra caution to make sure it doesn't spread to lymphatic system.

From August 2012 she is going to have ketu mahadasa who is in the 5th house and afflicting sun and mercury also with rahu's direct aspect. She needs to be very watchful for 7 years starting from August 2012 as far as her health is concerned.

Update
Tehelka just reported she is admitted to cancer hospital she was admitted to NY’s Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center so I was 100% sure she had cancer. Then her medical condition and type of cancer wasn't publicly available. Later in the day I found out the doctor who is treating her is the renowned cervix cancer specialist and written many papers on cervical cancer and lung cancer.

Secracy:
People keep asking everywhere why there is so much secrecy over Mrs. Sonia Gandhi's illness?
Answer is simple:

Her 1st lord / lagna lord into 12th house. 1st house denotes self, 12th house denotes privacy, seculation. the person having such combination likes to have privacy in all undertakings and personal matters. When the first lord is in 12th the person is also identified or related to distant land which she is.

How to end sufferings?

Our #Desires, and #karma with #expectations leads to #suffering. As the end result is not same as we expected. Importance of our karmas can be subjective from person to person. When we don't see fruits of completed actions we become sad, we suffer, agony. Remedy #karma without expectation, give up #desires. This will definitely be a key to end of sufferings.

Lord krishna has also mentioned in Shrimad Bhagawat Geeta that one should do their karma without expecting any results. whenever we do a small thing we always think how people will like this? Will they appreciate? Am I going to get any rewards? promotion? etc? The importance of work we do may be high in OUR eyes but not in others eyes. They may view it as a piece of work. Hence when we don't get desired results we become sad, we suffer, we grief, We start hating people or disliking them as they didn't appreciate our work.

If you work hard without expecting any results such selfless work will be noticed ultimately there will be a reward not because you expected it but when you do selfless karma without any results it will have a higher impact, higher quality and reward will come, but do not expect anything.

According to astrology sufferings come because of weak Saturn or Saturn's aspects. The Saturn wants you to work hard, without any desires. The Saturn means old man. wise who wants to train you. He wants you to work wiser and harder. He wants you to put more efforts. Hence during sade sati only remedy is to follow Shrimad Bhagawad Geeta's teachings is to work hard without any desires and expecting end results of rewards in our mind.

Purnimant #Shravan #savan has started from Jul 16 2011(for north india) and will end on August 13th 2011 (north india). North india follows Purnimant month systems. Which means purnima is the last day of the lunar month for them. Where as Gujarat, Maharastra and south india follows amavasyant system in which the last day of the lunar month is amavasya. Amavasyant #shravan will start on Jul 31 (Gujarat, maharastra, southindia) and will end on end on 29 Aug 2011 (india) and 28th Aug 2011 in usa.

Muhurtha: Using it abroad (America, Canada, Middle East, Australia, Newzeland etc...)

Everyone in India has their favorite panchangam and the family priest they use to perform puja and muhurtha. The problem comes here. Whenever you approach him he'll give you muhurtha as per indian time and then will say subtract the time difference from india to your country. This is the wrong thing. If you are living abroad then you should use panchangam for that location because you cannot use muhurtham you have got from one city in india in another city. For example: if you got muhurtham for chennai or hyderabad you cannot use it in New Delhi or Kolkata because their sunrise, sunset, longitude, latitude will be different.

At times people also refer to the readymade muhurtha available in calendars like kaalnirnay or similar panchangas. The readymade muhurtha available in most online panchang or print panchang are based in India (Printing cost is very expensive hence they don't make for other countries), and they are very general purpose for use within india or city they are targeted for. Even if you are living in India, it may not be applicable to you. Those ready made muhurthas are certainly not applicable outside of india. Most people living abroad think that they can safely subtract their time difference from india time and get muhurtha. This is completely wrong assumption. One cannot substract the timezone from muhurtha given in indian panchangam or by an astrologer in india by just subtracting the timezone. If the astrologer has taken longitude, latitude and local sunrise of the place into calculation then its okay. Otherwise it's not. Please remember that panchangam available in india are designed and prepared only for india and they cannot be applicable outside of india. It is sad that most well educated indians who live abroad still think muhurtha abroad = indian muhurtha time - time difference.

Please remember one needs to calculate muhurtha for your city. Please note that that muhurtha calculated for Chennai or Hyderabad will not be applicable to New delhi (And they are in the same time zone. Using those indian muhurtha abroad is different thing altogether).

Following important points for calculating muhurtha:

Muhurtha is heavily dependent on local events like local sunrise, sunset. Most coutries in northern latitudes beyond 35 degrees north will have sunrise in summer around 4:00 am. The sun will set in winter around 9:30 pm or even beyond. During winter sun will rise after 8:00 AM and will set around 3:30 PM. This isn't case with india.
One will note that on Mondays rahukalam starts at 7:30 am. Now during winter if sun rises at 8:15 AM how can rahukalam start at 7:30 AM? before the sunrise? This is another wrong assumption using fix rahukalam timings. The standard time and clocks were introduced by britishers in india, before that we used ghati--gadiyalu etc... Hence this means one can't even use fixed rahukalam even in india using abroad is wrong thing. Rahukalam etc are dependent on local events like the sunrise, sunset etc....
Another important factor in calculating muhurtha is the lagna shuddhi. Lagnashuddhi is the boss of muhurtha. Lagna shuddhi means removing afflication by planets at the time of muhurtha. Now to do that we prepare jatakam / kundali at the time of muhurtha which is heavily dependent on local longitude, latitude. This means you cannot convert time to indian time and prepare kundli / jatakam.
Among many other factors, one has to check rasi bala,tara bala, surya bala, guru bala, agnivasa, udayastha, chandara mukham (for graha pravesha etc...) and other details.

Ritu, Seasons and Vedic Calendar

Ritu -- ऋतुः means seasons. We all know what we learned in high school that how seasons occurs. We mostly see two main seasons -- Winter and Summer. India we have rainy season too that gives us three main ritus -- seasons -- Winter, Summer and Rainy seasons. Vedic rishis have further divided these into 6 ritus. They are:

Vasant -- Spring
Grishma -- Summer
Varsha -- Monsoon
Sharad -- Autumn
Hemant -- Prewinter
Shishir -- Winter

High school science class taught us that Spring (Vasant) starts when the earth's tilt is neighter facing sun nor away from sun. There are twice in a year when this situation arises these points are called equinoxes. The first point is Vernal Equinox -- or in sanskrit/hindi -- Vasant Sampaat. The other point is called Autumnal Equinox -- or Sharad Sampaat. On the day of Vernal equinox the sun is in tropical zodiac (Sayana) sign/rasi Aries/Mesha. Autumnal equinox means the sum in the tropical (sayana) Libra /Tula rasi. When the tilt is facing the sun we have summer. Actually when the tilt is facing the sun we have a summer already in a peak. That day is the longest day on the earth and also what we call is begining of dakshinayana. That day the Sun is in tropical (sayana) Cancer/Karka. Exactly opposite point in the sky is when the earth's tilt is facing away from the sun. This marks winter in northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere. That time the Sun in the tropical (Sayana) Capricorn/Makara rashi. Hence the season are relative to the earth's tilt and the sayana zodiac.

There are various systems of determining ritus/seasons as per indian astronomy. Most commonly used are:

Chandramana -- some dharmashastra favours this
Nirayana Saur Masa -- some dharmashastra also favours this.
Sayana Saur Masa -- Jyotisha/drika siddhanta favours this.

The rules for determining ritus / seasons as per chandramana:

Vasant -- Spring (Chaitra and Vaishakha)
Grishma -- Summer (Jyestha and Ashadha)
Varsha -- Monsoon (Shravana and Bhadrapada)
Sharad -- Autumn (Ashwin and Kartika)
Hemant -- Prewinter (Margashira and Pushya/Pausha)
Shishir -- Winter (Magha and Phalguna)

Now the problem with this system is sometimes we have adhika masa and lunar year is roughly 10 days shorter than tropical year and hence every year begining of chaitra masa slides by roughly 10 days. This ends up roughly 30 days in 3 years and compelling us to add one more extra month in the hindu calendar we call it adhika masa. We all know that seasons don't really shift based on chandramana. The Chaitra masa can start anywhere between March 20 to April 20. We already know that spring doesn't shift accordingly, likewise summer doesn't change. We already know that monsoon (in india) doesn't start based on this rules. Hence this system is not advised as per jyotisha and drika panchanga siddhanta because seasons are not corrosponding to the chandramana theory. However still some panchangas incorrectly use this system overriding jyotisha.

Grishma -- Summer (the sun in Nirayana Vrishabha and Mithuna)
Varsha -- Monsoon (the sun in Nirayana Karka and Simha)
Sharad -- Autumn (the sun in Nirayana Kanya and Tula)
Hemant -- Prewinter (the sun in Nirayana Vrischika and Dhanush)
Shishir -- Winter (the sun in Nirayana Makara and Kumbha)

According to some vastanta ritu starts with Mesha samkranti.. so Vasanta will be -- Mesha & Vrishabha, Grishma will be Mithuna & Karka.... so on and so forth.

We already know that due to precession of equinox we have two zodiac -- tropical (sayana), and sidereal (nirayana). At one point of time they were same and every year it slides by 50 seconds. This means once upon a time the Vasant ritu used to start at March 21st as per the nirayana calendar but now as the zodiac slides due to precision of equinox now that date is around April 14th. After 5000 years it will be somewhere in july or august. Do you ever think of having a Spring in July or August? It will never. The Actual seasons depends on the earth's tilt towards the sun and hence jyotisha grantha doesn't recommend using this system as well. However still some panchangas incorrectly use this system overriding jyotisha.

The rules for determining ritus / seasons as per Drika Siddhanta:

Vasant -- Spring (the sun in Sayan Mina and Mesha)
Grishma -- Summer (the sun in Sayan Vrishabha and Mithuna )
Varsha -- Monsoon (the sun in Sayan Karka and Simha)
Sharad -- Autumn (the sun in Sayan Kanya and Tula)
Hemant -- Prewinter (the sun in Sayan Vrishik and Dhanush)
Shishir -- Winter (the sun in Sayan Makar and Kumbha)

The actual seasons corresponds to the earth's tilt. If you extend earth's equator into heavens it's celestial equator. The intersection point of sun's annular path -- ecliptic and celestial equator are called Vernal Equinox -- Spring Equinox and Autumnal Equninox. This points are also known as sayana mesha 0 and sayana tula 0 degrees respectively. Hence the positions of sayana sun should be used to determine seasons. Most drika panchanga like Date panchangam, Janmabhoomi panchanga, Govt. Of India's Rastriya panchangam and mypanchang.com will use the position of tropical sun to determine uttarayana, dakshinayana and the seasons -- Ritu.

However some people will argue that for pooja sankalpa only chandramanam should be considerred but that argument is void because as per surya siddhanta and jyotisha grantha only those things should be used in panchanga that corresponds to drika or dryasha siddhanta. Following dates in a year where ritus will start based on drika siddhanta.

Vasant: Feb/19 to April/19
Grishma: April/20 to Jun/21
Varsha: Jun/22 to Aug/22
Sharad: Aug/23 to Oct/22
Hemant: Oct/23 to Dec/21
Shishir: Dec/22 to Feb/18

Now if we look at seasons. Every Ayana has 3 seasons, Uttarayana has 3 and Dakshinayana has 3 seasons. The varsha ritu (in India) starts around Jun/22. Winter is already chilly in december, from October onwards weather gets cold everywhere. The Summer really starts around April 20 where weather gets warmer. If you see a calendar where it doesn't corrosponds to these dates then its not as per drika siddhanta. Why do we have to say wrong ritu in our sankalpa? Sankalpa means resolution. We need to make correct resolutions. Then our puja will come true. Rastriya panchanga, mypanchang.com, Sri Lalbahadur Shastri Rastriya Sanskrit Vidhyapeeth Panchangam, Janmabhoomi panchangam will use drika siddhanta in ritus. However some people will argue that for pooja sankalpa only chandramanam should be considerred but that argument is void because as per surya siddhanta and jyotisha grantha only those things should be used in panchanga that corresponds to drika or dryasha siddhanta. We have learned seasons don't jump based on sidereal positions of luminaries but its completely astronomical thing.

Makara Sankranti, Pongal, Lohri, Magha Bisu – A Moment of Thanksgiving to Specific gods, Nature and Farm Animals

Makara Sankranthi is one of the important festivals celebrated all over India in different ways. While it is called Sankranthi or Pongal in South India it is called as Lohri in North India, Magha Bisu in Assam. Though there are a few difference in the way people celebrate in each area, the most common theme of the festival is Thanksgiving to nature and gods who blessed people with a good harvest, mainly Surya(Sun god), Agni(Fire god).

Pongal in South India

This is one of the many festivals associated with seasons, and is associated with winter harvest. It is celebrated for three days. The first day is called Bhogi which is the day for the family. The second day is Sannkrathi which is dedicated to worshipping Surya, the Sun god. The third day is Kanuma which is dedicated to cleaning cows, farm animals and farm equipment and also offering prayers to them for helping with a successful harvest season.

This festival is widely called as Pongal because it is at this time that a special rice pudding (sweet and spicy) is made with new rice from the fresh harvest. The advent of Pongal is associated with spring-cleaning and burning of rubbish, symbolizing the destruction of evil. Decorative designs or rangolis are traced on floors and on the day of the Pongal. These three days the streets in South India look amazingly colorful with different designs of rangolis. Often contest is held for the best rangoli in local communities.

In Andhra Pradesh people eat curry mixed with many vegetables and Jawar roti with sesame seed mix. Also, people take bath with water sesame seeds. In the evenings little children under five are blessed by pouring a bowl of mixture with fruits, nuts and sesame seeds. One belief is that this ritual will take away the crankiness of children. This is called Bhogi Pallu.

Spiritual Importance of Pongal

On the spiritual side, it is at the time of Pongal that Andal, who is also called Goda( the incarnation of Bhoodevi) marries Lord Ranganatha after 30 days of Thiruppavai Vratham. Sri Vaishnavas celebrate the month of Marghazhi reciting Thiruppavai, an amazing poem of thirty verses in praise of Lord Ranganatha, composed by Andal, one of the 12 Alwars(saints immersed in God). Goda Kalyanam is performed in all Sri Vaishanav temples all over South India during the Pongal time.

North India Lohri

In North India this is the festival of rabi crops(Wheat, Barley, Mustard, Peas, Oats, etc.). On this day people light a bonfire, offer prayers to fire god, dance around fire singing traditional Punjabi songs and songs related to the season with all the joy, and then have a feast with fresh harvest. People dress up in colorful clothes, invite family and friends over and spend the day in sharing food and gifts with each other. This is the time people give charity to those who are less fortunate to demonstrate how sharing and caring is most important quality of human beings. Eating sesame and jaggery is believed to take away the bad elements from the minds and hearts of people.

Many stories are associated with the festival of Lori, like the name originates from the name of Sant Kabir’s wife, Loi. According to another legend Holika and Lohir were sisters. Another legend says that the festival came into practice after a highway robber Dulla Bhatti carried a good deed by stopping a girl being taken into prostitution and marrying her with a Hindu bod.

Irrespective of different traditions this is a Pongal/Lohri is a great occasion to be thankful to gods, friends, families, nature, farm animals and all those who help to make life happy in many ways. And it is these age old traditions and practices that make India a land of mysteries and wonders. Hence maintaining these traditions and passing them onto our next generations is highly important and perhaps the duty of every Hindu, so that the richness of our culture continue to live for many generations to come.

Uttarayana / Dakshinayana:

There is a common misconception that Makar Samkranti is the Uttarayana. This is because at one point in time Sayana and Nirayana Zodiac were same. Every year equinoxes slides by 50 seconds due to precision of equinoxes, giving birth to Ayanamsha and causing Makar Samkranti to slide further. As a result if you think Makar Samkranti is uttarayana then as it’s sliding it will come in June after 9000 years. However Makar Samkranti still holds importance in our rituals as a Samkranti. All Drika Panchanga makers will use the position of the tropical Sun to determine Uttarayana and Dakshinayana. Hence January 14th isn’t Uttarayana.

The season occurs based on tropical sun (without ayanamsha). This is due to earth’s tilt of 23.45 degrees. The earth circles around sun with this tilt. When the tilt is facing the Sun we get summer and when the tilt is away from the Sun we get winter. Because of this tilt it seems like the Sun travels north and south of the equator. This motion of the sun is called Uttarayana – The sun is moving towards North and Dakshinayana the sun is moving towards South. This motion of the sun moving towards the north is called Uttarayana. When it is moving towards the south it is called Dakshinayana. This causes rise to seaons. They are dependent on equinoxes and solstices. Actual Uttarayana occurs on December 21st/22nd of every year. All drika panchangam like Janmabhoomi/Daate panchang/Govt. of India's Rastriya panchanga will mention December 21st/22nd as Uttarayana.

Ekadashi finishes at 14:26 on December 17th as per Indian standard time. If you subtract. The new york time difference of 10 hours 30 minutes it will be the night of 16th and morning of 17th which is 3 hours 56 minutes. The rises in New york around 7:56 AM and ekadasi isn't visible on that day in New york. but it's visible at sunrise on 16th December and hence as per EST time zone it will be 16th December for New york but if you take the Central timezone then also it's 16th December same goes for other timezone. Basically in USA and Canada Vaikuntha Ekadasi is on 16th December and other parts of the world on 17th December. Even in Carrebian islands its on December 16th. Rest of the world -- 17th December.

Those who observe vaikuntha ekadasi on 17th in USA/Canada they are not observing it correctly. The earth isn't flat. If earth was flat then vaikuntha ekadasi would come to USA/Canada as the same date mentioned in indian calendar. But the earth is round and we have days and night.

Ekadashi finishes at 14:26 on December 17th as per Indian standard time. If you subtract. Hindu Panchangam in the west and the east (the USA, India and the Australia)

Indian Calendar/Panchangam is used everywhere where hindu lives. I even see people posting I want pambu panchangam but I live in USA and not available. The question arises can indian panchangam used outside of India?

People usually align the hindu festivals with the English dates based on indian calendar and then they think if an indian calendar says Janmasthami on a certain date say Sept 2^nd 2010, then everywhere in the world it will appear on the Sept 2^nd. USA is 10:30 to 15:30 hours behind from India so some of them also think it will come next day in USA, i.e. Sept 3^rd 2010. They also argue that my family priest in india told me to celebrate on this date and according to him indian calendar will apply to all places in the world. This is completely wrong assumption.

The English date and the day (Sunday, Monday, Tuesday etc..) changes at the midnight whereas the hindu date or tithi, and the hindu days doesn't change at the midnight. Hindu day changes at the sunrise. All days are from one sunrise to another sunrise. Sunday will start at one sunrise and end at next sunrise.

The hindu date (tithi -- depends on the positions of sun and the moon at any given time) changes anytime as celestial bodies keep moving. They can change anytime between two sunrises. This means if prathama tithi ends today at 23:02 it doesn't mean that dwitiya tithi will end tomorrow at the same time. It can end at 18:00, 18:09 or 28:27 (anytime after 24 means time after midnight but before next day sunrise), or whatever.

Now what's the hindu date (Tithi)?
It's simple tithi is a lunar day, or the time it takes for the longitudinal angle between the moon and the sun to increase by 12°. Tithis begin at varying times of day and vary in duration from approximately 19 to approximately 26 hours. So maximum distance between the sun and moon can be 360 degrees. If you divide them by 12 degrees that gives you 30 equal parts. Means we have 30 dates in hindu calendar divided between the bright half, and (Shukla Paksha, Waxing moon) and the darker half (Krishna Paksha, and the waning moon).

Panchangam contains two types of calculations. One based on the local coordinates like longitude and latitude(Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, Moonset, etc)., and the other is based on geocentric planetary positions.
Sunrise, Sunset, Moonrise, Moonset times are always calculated for each and every place on the earth. Local Sunrise, Sunsets are used to find daily Rahukalam, Yamagandam, gulikai, durmuhurtham times.

The other set of calculations are calculated from the center of the earth (geocentric). The positions of heavenly bodies are calculated from the center of the earth and hence they are geocentric. The planetary positions are first calculated from the center of the sun (heliocentric) and then using the spherical trigonometry they are converted to the center of the earth (geocentric). The tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana and daily planetary positions are based on the positions of the Sun and Moon in the heavens and they are part of the astronomical phenomenon. These are astronomical phenomenon it happens instantly at the same moment on the earth and hence thithis, nakshatra will end at the same time / instance all over the world and we have to convert them to the local standard time of the specific country of interest. When eclipse occurs and it's visible all over the world then one converts that time into their timezone. The planets don't wait for sunrise or sunset at the particular place. They just keep moving, like earth is moving around the Sun.

These planetary position of the sun and the moon is computed based on the local time (longitude, latitude) converted to the Universal Time. The tithi end time is also calculated in the Universal time which is then converted to the local time of the place. The planets are calculated from the center of the earth their positions at the given time will be same all over the world. The same way to observe any celestial event occurs we need to convert it to our local time. Indian Panchang makers convert this to Indian time. The very same say we need to convert it to our time zone for America (PST/PDT, CST/CDT, MST/MDT, EST/EDT). After adding the time difference we get the resulting english date and time when they end. Hence, when the calendar is made of india the date they mention is when that tithi will end as per the english date in india. If you take the same date and time use it anywhere in the world as it is then we have a wrong result because of the time difference, and sunrise, sunsets.

For example:
October 17th 2008 the Ashwayuja (Ashwin) krishna Paksha / Poornimant Kartik Krishna paksha tithi Tritiya ends at 16:39:21 Indian Standard Time, and chturthi starts. That means at 16:00 hours there is tritiya still prevailing in India. Now on October 17th 2008 in Seattle, WA at the 16:00 hours we won't have tritiya at that time. We already have chaturthi started. Why? a) Planets keep on moving.... 13 hours have passed and the position of sun and moon have changed. So what time Tritiya will end in Seattle? The time difference is 13 hours 30 minutes (with one our day light saving time it gives the difference of 12 hours 30 minutes from IST). So, let's subtract 12 hours 30 minutes from the 16:39:21. That gives us 04:09:21 AM on October 17th. So on October 17th after that time we'll have chaturthi tithi and before we have tritiya. The same way if tithi ends at 8:39 AM on Sept 12 in India it will end at 20:09 PM on Sept 11th in Seattle. The same way Western Australia is 8 hours ahead of GMT and hence the chaturthi will end there at 12:09 PM on Sept 12th. The planets don't wait for appropriate tithi to arrive on some english date at any location in the world. If it really did we won't have any days and nights (If it happens then celestial bodies will remain static in sky). The earth is round and it keeps moving, we have days and nights. It doesn't wait for tithi or festivals. Time never waits for anyone. It goes on. The sun doesn't rise instantly at the same time all over the world. Hence we need to convert the tithi, nakshatra, yoga, and karana time to local standard time. Now we know what time a given tithi ends it's a time to decide festival dates for each region.

How festivals are determined?
The usual rule to observe festival is whenever that tithi prevails at the sunrise time. But each festivals may have different rules of observance. For example: Ganesh Chaturthi. Sankathara (Sankshathi chauth) chaturthi, Janmashtami, Mahashivaratri, Karwa Chauth, etc... For example Ganesha chaturthi has to be oserved when the chaturthi tithi is observed during the 8th/15 part of the dinmana or the 3/5th part of the dinmana. The dinmana is the difference of local sunset and the sunrise on the same day. If chaturthi is not prevailing during that period then take the second day. Likewise for the karwa chauth and the sankathara chaturthi the chaturthi tithi must be prevailing during the moonrise time, if it doesn't prevail then take the day where it prevails during the sunrise.

So for example if one thithi is observed at the moonrise time in india it may or may not be observed during the moonrise time on the same day in the different part of the world. It may be very well observed on the previous day if you are in America or the next day if you are in Japan, Fiji, Australia and other countries, depending on the local events like sunrise, moonrise, and time difference. Sometime it could be observed on the same day as the date mentioned in India. America is behind india in terms of time. To arrive at the time from india we need to subtract the time from indian time and hence festivals could arrive a day early in usa but not later. For example if a total lunar eclipse is visible in india at 5:00 AM we’ll have a previous day in USA, not the next.

For these reasons Indian panchangam you buy in India cannot be used outside of India. Even sometimes festival observance dates could vary between Kolkata to Mumbai. So Forget about using it outside India. If you are looking for precise panchangam for your city please visit mypanchang.com

While I was leaving home i got call from someone, "Your website mypanchang.com has only one muhurta for dhanteras day where as our temple priests gives 4 or 5 muhurta? Why do you give only one muhurtha in the day?".

I smiled first and answered. The best time to do diwali / dhanteras puja is pradosha kala and sthira lagna. According to dharmashastra when you do puja during pradosha kala (sunsset to sunset + 2 hours 24 minutes) with sthira langa (Vrishabha, Simha, Vrischika, and Kumbha) lakshmi will stay in your house -- sthira means she'l ll be fixed in your house, won't leave your house. The another good time is Mahanishitha kala (midnight - 24 minutes to midnight +24 minutes) with sthira lagna on diwali day. This is best time. We have given both muhurtha on our site. :)

Sometimes muhurtha may prevail for only 5 to 6 minutes. Then what to do? You do purvang puja -- Ganesh puja, kalasha puja before that muhurtha and start chanting some lakshmi mantra till the muhurtha time arrives. When muhurtha time arrives do lakshmi invocation and do puja and then it can continue beyond that time.

Now when other pundit gives you 3 or 4 muhurta they are giving you what is known as per chogadia, or guari panchangam, Which is good only for travelling not for puja muhurtha. I am not sure why they even mention it. We only give best possible time. If you do puja in those chogadia muhurtha which is not prevailing during pradosha or mahanishitha kala then it's just lakshmi puja done on any other day. For diwali importance to puja is given when lakshmi comes to your home. She visits every home during Pradosha kala and mahanishitha kala Also another thing to note that we have muhurtha for over 394 major cities worldwide along with their panchangam. If you have been following my site i've explained you cannot use calendar/panchang/jantri or muhurat time from India and use it abroad. Indian panchang/jantri/calendar is waste outside of india due to longitude, latitude, time-difference, different sunrise, sunset, moonrise timings. Asthami should be there at the time of moonrise. hindu day is from one sunrise to another sunrise and hence when moonrise occurs past midnight but before next day sunrise (normal for asthami) previous day needs to be taken for Ahoi Asthami.

The similar situation arises in usa on 29th October and on 30th during moonrise asthami not visible and hence for people in USA/Canada/UK, October 29th and for gulf, India and other countries East of GMT its 30th October 2010.

Someone called me and said karwa chauth. dot com says "This year Karwa Chauth is on 25th October and your own mypanchang.com says 26th. What's the truth? Like anyone will say I am right! I am right! hence i said I am right but i don't like to say that without explanation. I've no clue why some sites say 25th October 2010. When I was visiting Vancouver BC last week. Mr. Ganesh Nanda from Nanda Jewellers also raised the same point, saying some people says 25th and some say 26th October. Which is true please punditji explain us.

Rule for karwa chauth:

Common misconception:
Most people believe that it's a 4th night after purnima. Actually its not the 4th night from purnima but the 4th tithi after purnima which is chaturthi tithi prevailing during the moonrise.

More detailed rule as per dharmashastra.

Tithi Chaturthi must prevail during moonrise if not take the second day. It's not the 4th day after purnima but chaturthi tithi visible during moonrise. That's the important rule.

On the moonrise time of the 25th October chaturthi is visible only in the one place in the whole world is -- Hawaii, rest of the world tritiya is visible at the moonrise of 25th october. Hence 25th cannot be taken for karwa chauth. When chaturthi isn't visible during the moonrise of both days then we need to take the second day. Hence we have to take 26th October for karwa chauth for the rest of the world. If you are reading this please change your website to reflect the correct date.

I have no idea where karwa chauth dot com getting ideas about 25th. :) The actual date is only for Hawaii karwa chauth is on 25th October for rest of the world including india, united states, and everywhre its october 26th 2010.

Amrutha, Siddha and Marana Yogas

I've been continuously telling people that your favourite panchangam from india cannot be used outside of india. Please read more here. Recently I got a phone call from a gentleman from kerala looking for a muhurtha in New york region. I pulled up mypanchang.com's new york calendar for 2011 and checked for January 22 2011 has Marana yoga. I checked. It was pubba (Purva Phalguni Nakshatra). Now Purva phalguni nakshatra and saturday combination creates a Labma Yoga (part of ananadi yoga) which in turn gives hani... loss and which maps to marana yoga as per tamil calendar. I said that day has marana hoga. However for weddings and other things there is a completely different approach in muhurtha. This yogas are simply used for travel. Now a days people book date well in advance without knowing the date is good or bad.

They called up some temple in New york and they said nope its not marana yoga its a Amrutha yoga. I was surprised to know. I double checked calculation. As per calendar in india it would have been siddha yoga because Magha nakshatra and Saturday combination gives siddha yoga. Hence I said may be in india (In india it has a siddha yoga), not in new york. The gentleman replied 5 priests from that temple and one in houston temple says its amrutha yoga. I was surprised. very much surprised. To have amrutha yoga on saturday they need Ashlesha and Saturday or combination or Swathi and Saturday combination which is not remotely possible on those days. I am so much surprised to see the knowledge of priests or may be they wanted to book marriage and not let client go? I am still surprised why learned people make such mistake. Please one of those five learned priests from New-York Temples enlighten me about how did you arrive at conclusion that saturday and purva-phalguni nakshatra gives Amrutha yoga.

Finally I hanged up the phone saying well its your call. I live in seattle not even performing your daughter's marraige nor we are charging for muhurthas. Its a free/honorary service. The temple priests should-not book puja based on some schedule or log book, instead they should spend some time to calculate right muhurtha, otherwise they are incurring bad karma on their part.

The one important thing as per muhurtha chintamani is (among others) is location of fire... called agni vasa... when the fire is on earth doing homam/havan gives happiness..... when the fire is in heaven doing homam/havan gives Loss of life, when the fire is in patala or hades (the underworld) doing havan on that day gives loss of wealth. How to know this? We have recently updated our panchangam to show this information. Hindu Panchangam available on mobile phones -- Iphone, Windows Mobile etc..

You are at temple and wanted to check Rahukalam? Today's nakshatra? and other information and no computer available? or access to panchangam or computers? If you are a priest and going to someone's house for puja and you want to check today's nakshatra and other information for your city? We have gotten many requests from people to provide mobile panchangam and we've heard you. Your worries end now. Your favourite mypanchang.com site has gone mobile now. All you need is javascript enabled browser on your mobile phone (Opera browser or IE on windows mobile, Iphone, etc...) with mobile internet connection. all you have to do is visit following site and it's very easy to remember:

You'll be presented with a default panchang for Seattle, WA, USA but you can change your location by clicking the link on top of the screen http://m.mypanchang.com/mobilechangeloc.html). However, you'll need javascript enabled browser. For best viewing in the display settings of browser uncheck following, "Automatic full screen", Select Minmum font size to "normal". With this you can have mobile panchang free on your cell phone. We'll keep adding features to this mobile site. Currently you can view only today's panchangam, but we are working on providing full fledged panchangam on your mobile phone. all you need is javascript enabled browser. I've tested it on my windows mobile 6.5 phone. (HTC TILT with Opera & IE browser).

Supported Mobile Phones: Any Phone that has internet capabilitiy with a browser that supports javascript, cookies. Currently we have tested it with windows mobile 6.0 and above with Opera Browser. We have some issues with IE on windows 6.0. Tested on Iphone, Symbian OS.
Supported Browsers: Opera on Windows mobile phone seems to be working well. Default browser on Iphone and Symbian OS works well. Waiting for Windows Mobile 7 Phones.
Setting Default Location: Sometimes you'll see your default location isn't setting. To overcome this you can set your location here and then bookmark the resulting page after clicking Save Default button. This will ensure you'll have your city displayed all the time. This is because your browser may not be supporting cookies.
Selecting another date: To view panchangam for another date click on the edit box before the "Select a Date" button and then after selecting a new date click on the Select a Date button. Until you press this button the panchang for requested date will not be displayed. When you click on the date edit box and don't see the control please enter the date there in YYYY-MM-DD format. Here try to make sure the year is 4 digits. the month is 2 digits. If January enter 01, for dates less than 10 start it with zero same goes with a month. For example: 2010-01-09.

Hindu Panchang (Panchangam) RSS feeds, Daily Updates, Mobile Panchangam

I would like to announce availability of RSS feeds(beta) for your city. This means you can get daily panchang updates in your inbox using RSS feeds (via Microsoft outlook) or RSS reader. It will send you two feeds one for today's panchang and one for tomorrow's panchang. To access this you can visit http://www.mypanchang.com/panchang.html and click on your city and then click on RSS icon. Alternatively you can also visit http://www.mypanchang.com/rssfeeds.html and click on RSS icon.

Please send us your valuable feedback. This means you can also use AJAX readers and put it on your webpage and display daily panchang for your city on your webpage. Also you can use RSS Readers on your mobile phones and subscribe to feeds and get daily panchangam updates for free on your windows mobile phones or Iphones. Alternatively you can use windows sidebar gadget to get daily panchang updates via RSS Feeds.

Also we have new format for 2011 panchangam. We'll be testing this new format for feedback for few months. This new format can be accessed at http://www.mypanchang.com/panchang2011.html. you can click on your city and select appropriate english panchangam to see the new format. This is going to be the default format for America. For India and other countries we'll make old format will be available. Also this new format will allow you to print for your daily use. The calendar format we had doesn't fit on normal paper. But this will fit. Also we'll have various formats available like tabular, and other formats. This new format has many features like year number, samvatsara names.

We are also working on mobile application for windows mobile and Iphone. This will be available soon. Meantime you can use RSS feeds for your city to get daily updates on your desktop. More updates coming soon.

We are moving to new dedicated server with more space. This means we'll be shortly releasing 100 years panchang from 1900 to 2010 for selected cities in the world.
